Diving Deeper into God’s Sure Word
At this stage of the game, the Internet is starting to pop a bit with speculations and predictions about what might change about our lives if (and when!) we emerge from COVID-19 exile. Will online shopping replace many brick-and-mortar stores once and for all? What about movie theaters? Even the future of the handshake is now questionable, depending on which expert is speaking when.
But as the musical geniuses who wrote “Frozen II” so often remind us, some things never change. Plenty of things might make that list in a temporal sense, but isn’t it comforting to know that our God and His Word will never change?
In 1 Peter 1:24-25, we get a reminder of what God originally spoke through the prophet Isaiah:
“All flesh is like grass, and its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.”
That word, Peter clarifies for us, “is the good news that was preached to you.” Some of these original readers, no doubt, had been in the crowd at Pentecost when Peter and John were filled by the Holy Spirit and spoke so powerfully of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection that 3,000 believed and were changed on the spot.
It’s been 2,000 years since those early believers heard the message of the gospel and believed in Christ. But it’s that same word that you and I encounter when we sit on our couch or at the kitchen table to start our day. It’s that same word that we teach our children to memorize and urge each other to joyfully obey from the heart.
In his second letter, Peter impresses upon his readers (and us, by extension) that when we read the Bible, we’re not just reading someone’s expert analysis or some great novelists’ opus. No, we’re reading something that—even compared to the Transfiguration, where Peter, James, and John heard the very voice of God the Father—is “more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts” (2 Peter 1:20).
At a time when the whole world is caught up in uncertainty, we are not left without a sure word. In a world of darkness, we have the light of God’s Word to direct our path. None of us know quite how or when this time of isolation will end, but we do know that our Father promises to “never leave or forsake” us. And we know that our God and His Word never change.
Many of us have more time than ever to prioritize Bible reading, memorization, and meditation on the eternal Word of God. So, what are your goals during this time? What’s your plan to grow in your love for God’s Word?
Whether it’s reading a Psalm each day, a reading plan, memory verses, or taking advantage of a listening app like Dwell, make the best use of this present season by diving deeper into God’s unchanging Word.
