What is the purpose of a Community Group?

PURPOSE

The purpose of NCF Community Groups is to provide a space for people of all backgrounds to grow in their knowledge of and love for Christ, the Church, and our city.

APPROACH

Provide Space: Time together is necessary for any group to flourish and critical to effective discipleship. To live in community together, we encourage Community Groups (CGs) to meet weekly but not less than twice a month. Frequency can change during different seasons (e.g., summer break, holidays) but there should always remain a commitment to regular and predictable gathering.

Christ: In everything we do, Christ should be paramount. As CGs, we should pursue Christ relationally and intellectually together. This can take the form of studying the Bible or a Christian book, praying, fasting, worshiping, meditating, exhorting and confronting one another in love, or any other activity that encourages and promotes us seeking Christ.

Church: CGs are an opportunity for us to build deep and treasured relationships with the people of God. Sharing meals, playing games, and cheering on our children are all examples of what it can look like when we share our lives with each other. No Christian community is complete, however, without also sacrificially serving one another as Christ sacrificed himself for us. By serving one another through meal trains, intercession, hospital visits, rides, and baby sitting we testify to our communities about the transforming power of Christ in our own lives. While the primary context envisioned is the local church this also extends to the broader church family as well.

City: A CG focused only inwardly fails to capture the essence of Christianity, the sharing of the good news with those around us. CGs should be intentional about finding ways to serve their neighbors and community. The unique composition of each CG and the skills and passions that they have been blessed with by God will dictate how this looks in practice but this is something that should be evident in all CGs. What better way to demonstrate the transforming power of the gospel in our lives than by responding in love towards our neighbors by making friends, sharing our faith, and meeting the needs of those in our community.
